Lionel Messi said he will retire from the Argentina national team following their 4-2 loss on penalties against Chile after a 0-0 draw in the Copa America final.

"My thinking right now and thinking about it in the locker room, I'm done playing with the national team," Messi told a group of reporters.

Messi was asked if he was going to retire after Argentina's third straight loss in a final in three successive summers.

"I tried my hardest. It's been four finals, and I was not able to win. I tried everything possible. It hurts me more than anyone, but it is evident that this is not for me. I want more than anyone to win a title with the national team, but unfortunately, it did not happen."

Messi was asked if he would wear the Argentina shirt again despite still being just 29.

"I don't think so," he said. "I've thought about it. Like I said earlier, I tried everything possible to win. And that's it. It's four finals lost."

The news comes off the back of Messi's criticising the Argentine football federation (AFA) ahead of the final and revealing in a news conference on Friday that he had a backlog of complaints with the AFA.
