Netherlands Fires Danny Blind As Manager

Mar 27, 2017 1:08 PM

The Netherlands have fired Danny Blind as manager following their qualifying defeat by Bulgaria.

Blind was manager of the team for just 20 months and 18 matches.

Blind took over the national team from Guus Hiddink in July 2015 but was unable to lead the team to Euro 2016.

Blind said it was “a pity” his stint in charge of the national team had come to such a sorry end.

Blind’s son Daley, the Manchester United defender, paid tribute to his father in a post on Instagram. “Worked at the highest level, a dream for both of us as father and son,” he said. “It was not easy and it has not always been that, but I’m proud of how you’ve always taken responsibility and never gave up!”

Netherlands Interested In Hiring Louis Van Gaal Again

Mar 31, 2016 12:33 PM

The Dutch football association is targeting Louis van Gaal for a senior role.

Van Gaal parted ways with Netherlands as their head coach in 2014 after the World Cup to replace David Moyes as manager of Manchester United.

Van Gaal's current contract with United expires in 2017 but he's widely expected to be fired in favor of Jose Mourinho.

Netherlands have suffered a downturn in form since their showing at the 2014 World Cup, with the team missing out on qualification for Euro 2016.

Danny Blind is currently manager of the Netherlands and he's said he would welcome working with Van Gaal again.

Memphis, Van Persie Have Confrontation On Training Ground

Oct 12, 2015 12:22 PM

Memphis Depay and Robin van Persie had a confrontation on the training ground before Holland's win over Kazakhstan.

Danny Blind denied, however, that the argument was why Van Persie was dropped from the starting XI.

“We have discussed what happened, but that had nothing to do with my decision. It was a discussion during a training about a ball that should have been given over. Things like that happen often. There are sometimes situations in training where players think differently. That’s what happened and then it was over.

“I felt that he was not fit enough to start. I think that’s down to the fact that he has not played without pain for quite a while.”

Arjen Robben Rejects Van Gaal's Recruiting Efforts To United

Jul 12, 2014 11:43 PM

Arjen Robben rejected Louis Van Gaal's recruiting efforts to join him at Manchester United.

Robben has been at Bayern Munich since arriving from Real Madrid in 2009. Robben played in the EPL for Chelsea between 2004 and 2007.

"After the match he did ask me to come to Manchester," Robben said.

"I'm very happy with where I am now. I told [Van Gaal] that."

"Van Gaal is the best coach I've had, we've got a very special relationship but I will not make a transfer.

"I'm at the right place at Bayern so that has nothing to do with Van Gaal or United."

Robben recently signed an extension at Bayern through 2017.
