England To Report Montenegro For Racial Abuse Following Match

Mar 25, 2019 11:24 PM

England will report Montenegro for racial abuse following their 5-1 in Podgorica.

"It is unacceptable. I definitely heard abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked. There's no doubt in my mind it happened. I know what I heard. We have to make sure our players feel supported, they know the dressing room is there and we as a group of staff are there for them," said Southgate.

Raheem Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi were also subject to abuse.

"There should be a real punishment for this, not just the two or three people who were doing it - it needs to be a collective thing. This place holds 15,000. The punishment should be, whatever nation it is, if your fans are chanting racist abuse then it should be the whole stadium so no-one can come and watch. When the ban is lifted, the fans will think twice. They all love football, they all want to come and watch their nation so it will make them think twice before doing something silly like that," said Sterling.

Jadon Sancho On Sterling: He's Showing The Youngsters What It's About

Mar 24, 2019 11:04 AM

Jadon Sancho praised the influence of Raheem Sterling on the youth of the England squad.

“His numbers are crazy this year, and he’s showing all the youngsters what it’s about. I’m just happy that I’m sharing a pitch with him," said Sancho.

The 24-year-old Sterling has the second-highest number of cap on the squad, highlighting the side's youth.

Gareth Southgate added that the emphasis on youth reflects wider English culture.

“I think young people in all walks of society have a little bit more belief. I think bosses in all industries are less draconian in the way they work, and I think that helps youngsters to come in and be more creative and believe they can make a difference. They don’t baulk at anything. I just think, generally speaking, given an opportunity, they’ll go and surprise people.”

Gareth Southgate On Raheem Sterling: He's A Role Model For Players

Mar 23, 2019 11:43 AM

Gareth Southgate praised Raheem Sterling's hat-trick performance following England's 5-0 win over the Czech Republic.

“Raheem was brilliant, electric all night. He’s in a really confident moment, not only on the field but off the field he’s so mature and comfortable in himself. So I’m delighted for him to get the reaction that he did from the crowd," said Southgate.

The manager added that Sterling has become more simple and decisive in his approach.

"His finishes there and tonight were finishes that he was just taking on without thinking too much. At times you could almost see the thought process in the past but he’s hungry for those goals. I know he’s spoken about that before, of how he’s added that incentive to his game, and I thought he was devastating tonight. He’s a role model for the younger players coming in and he’s enjoyed that extra responsibility as well.”

Declan Rice To Play For England

Feb 13, 2019 11:58 AM

Declan Rice has submitted a request to transfer his international allegiance from Ireland to England.

The 20-year-old Rice had played 3 friendlies with Ireland before making the switch.

“I have equal respect and love for both England and Ireland and therefore the national team I choose to represent is not a clear-cut, simple selection. Particularly not for a young lad who never dreamed of being in this position. Like so many people around the world, I consider myself to be of mixed nationality. I am a proud Englishman, having been born and raised in London. However, I am just as proud of my family’s Irish heritage and my affinity and connection with the country. Ultimately it is a personal decision that I have made with my heart and my head, based on what I believe is best for my future. I fully accept that some Irish supporters will be disappointed … My pride at wearing the Irish shirt was always 100% genuine," posted Rice on Twitter.

Gareth Southgate Calls For More English Talent In Premier League

Dec 4, 2018 8:41 PM

Gareth Southgate described the lack of English players receiving minutes in the Premier League a "conundrum" needed to be solved.

His statement was in reference to record low number of English players starting for their club team in matchday 14 of the Premier League. Only 54 players eligible for the England national team started matches, down from a record-breaking low set the previous week.

Southgate stopped short of demanding a homegrown player quota, but added "nobody can tell me that, if players are good enough, they will come through. That is not true."

Wayne Rooney has been recalled by England for next week's friendly match against the United States.

Rooney retired from international soccer in 2017.
