Atlanta United Fires Gabriel Heinze As Manager

Atlanta United has fired Gabriel Heinze as manager.

Heinze did not make through one season with Atlanta after being hired in December 2020, finishing his time with a 2-4-7 league record.

Assistant coach Rob Valentino will take over as interim head coach with the club saying in a statement "a variety of issues relating to the day-to-day leadership of the team led the club to this decision."

Atlanta United have hired Gabriel Heinze as manager on a two-year contract.

"This is a milestone moment in Atlanta United history, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome Gabriel as our next head coach," club president Darren Eales said.

"Gabriel's playing philosophy and commitment to youth development closely align with our ideas at Atlanta United, and we are happy to welcome him as we move into our club's next chapter."

Heinze will replace Frank de Boer, who was sacked in July.

MLS To Restart Season In Home Markets On August 12th

MLS will restart its season in home markets on August 12th.

The league also announced that 18 teams will make the playoffs this season.

The MLS Cup final will take place on December 12th.

Each side will play 18 more matches for a 23-game regular season.

A "majority" of matches will be held without fans, though the league is working with local governments to have limited capacity for certain games.

Atlanta United Fires Frank De Boer

Frank De Boer has been fired as manager of Atlanta United FC.

"On behalf of Atlanta United, I would like to thank Frank for his leadership and commitment to the club," said Atlanta United President Darren Eales. "Under Frank's guidance, the club had a strong 2019 season in both MLS and international competition. After discussing it with Frank, the decision was reached mutually to part ways. In winning two trophies in his first season in charge, he will always be a part of the club's history, and with great appreciation and respect we wish him all the best in the future."

De Boer was the franchise's second coach, replacing Gerardo "Tata" Martino after the Argentine won the 2018 MLS Cup.

MLS Extends Training Ban Through March 27th

MLS extended their ban on first-team training through March 27th.

"During this time, MLS players are expected to remain in each club's respective market and have been advised to exercise safe social distancing measures. At this time, team training facilities may only be accessed for physical therapy purposes at the direction of club medical staff to ensure adherence to safety protocols," released the league in a statement.

The MLS season has been suspended until at least May 10th.

The league is unsure of exactly when their moratorium for training will be lifted.

MLS Suspends Season Through May 10th

MLS announced that they will extend their league suspension through May 10th.

The league said they were focused on finishing the season.

"MLS remains focused on playing the entire 2020 season and is evaluating all options, including pushing back the end of the season and playing MLS Cup in December, as the league did prior to the 2019 season. The league is also identifying other available dates," released the league in a statement.

The league could extend the MLS Cup into December to make extra room for matches.

Players are allowed to return to training on March 20th.

Atlanta United Acquire JJ Williams To Replace Josef Martinez

Atlanta United acquired JJ Williams from Birmingham Legion FC in the USL to replace Josef Martinez.

Martinez was ruled out for the season with a torn ACL.

"JJ is someone that had been on our radar over the offseason and we're pleased to add him to our roster. He is coming off a strong season with Birmingham and will provide additional competition to our attack," said technical director Carlos Bocanegra.

The 22-year-old played in 7 matches last season as a rookie with Columbus.

Martinez scored 27 goals in 29 matches last season.

MLS, Players Association Reach Agreement On New CBA

Major League Soccer and MLS Players Association have come to terms on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The new deal will last 5 years.

"As we prepare to celebrate our 25th season, we are very pleased to finalize a new five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement with our players. This agreement addresses key strategic priorities for the league and our players while also retaining the basic player compensation structure that has been the foundation for the growth and stability of Major League Soccer," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber.

Some new agreements include an increase in average salary, a decrease in Targeted Allocation Money, a share of the league's new media starts in 2023 and 2024, and charter flights.

The transfer fee is in the low seven figures, according to reports.

The 25-year-old was the club's first designated player in 2017.

Atlanta United go into the season without Villalba, Darlington Nagbe, Julian Gressel, and Gonzalez Pirez from last year's team.
