Tim Howard To Retire At End of MLS Season

Jan 31, 2019 2:45 PM

Tim Howard announced that he will retire at the end of the 2019 MLS season.

"It's been one heck of a ride. This is something that's been on my radar for a number of years now, probably since I signed with Colorado. I knew that the length of the contract would take me to being 40, and it seemed like the right time. I've always had my sights set on this, and there are other things I want to do. For a lot of those reasons I wanted to make sure that this would be the end. The timing just makes a lot of sense to do it now before the season to get that out of the way so that it's not a distraction. That's what's most important to me. I feel great. It's not something I thought about last night. It's a decision I've been very comfortable with for quite a long time in my own head and heart. I feel good," said Howard.

The 39-year-old keeper added that he would not pursue a career in coaching following his retirement.

Real Madrid Is Highest Earning Club Of 2018

Jan 24, 2019 2:37 PM

Real Madrid and Barcelona moved past Manchester United to become the top earning clubs in 2018 in terms of revenue according to Deloitte's annual report.

The Premier League had 6 out of the top 10 highest earning clubs.

The 20 highest-earning clubs generated over $9.5 billion, a 6% increase from last year.

“European football remains a bull market, with annual revenue growth of almost €450m [approximately £390m]. Real Madrid’s outstanding financial performance in 2017-18 is built on their long history of success on the pitch, most recently three consecutive Champions League titles. This has enabled the club to continue to drive commercial revenue as the appetite to partner with Europe’s most successful clubs remains stronger than ever," said Dan Jones, a Deloitte partner.

Usain Bolt Retires From Football

Jan 23, 2019 12:49 PM

Usain Bolt has retired from football, adding that "his sports life is over” to focus on business.

Bolt scored two goals for the Central Coast Mariners last year but was unable to come to a contractual agreement with the club. He also turned down a contract offer from Valletta, a club in Malta.

“It was fun while it lasted. I don’t want to say it wasn’t dealt with properly, but I think we went about it not the way we should …You live and you learn. It was a good experience, I really enjoyed just being in a team.”

Maurizio Sarri On Eden Hazard: More Individual Than Leader

Jan 23, 2019 12:43 PM

After accusing his players of not being mentally prepared for matches, Maurizio Sarri said Eden Hazard was not yet ready to be a captain.

“I don’t know in this moment ... in this moment, he’s more an individual player than a leader. He is very important for us, of course, because he is a great player. He always can win the match in two minutes. Sometimes in one minute. But, at the moment, he’s not a leader. He’s a great player. One of the best in the world," said Sarri.

Sarri added that he has to shape Chelsea around Hazard's individual qualities.

"You know very well that Eden, at the moment, is a wonderful player. But he’s an individual player. He’s an instinctive player. For him, it’s very difficult to play only in one position. He likes very much to go to the ball, in the direction of the ball. He wants the ball at his feet. So it’s very difficult for him to play as a striker, but also as a winger. We have to organise the other 10 players in the defensive phase because he needs to play everywhere on the pitch.”

PSG Fined 100,000 Euros For Ethnic Profiling

Jan 22, 2019 9:16 PM

The French league (LFP) fined PSG 100,000 Euros for racially profiling youth players.

PSG did not use the data for discriminatory purposes, though the club broke a French law against collecting an individual's racial or ethnic origin.

PSG accepted blame and stated that they not know their registration department collected data on individual ethnic backgrounds.

"There is no case of discrimination that can be proved. It is more a case of individual clumsiness and collective negligence," stated LFP disciplinary commissioner Sebastien Deneux.

Maurizio Sarri: Chelsea Struggle To Get Up For Big Matches

Jan 20, 2019 2:38 AM

Maurizio Sarri criticized Chelsea's mentality following their 2-0 loss to Arsenal.

"It seems we really struggle to get ourselves up for these games. I'm really angry about the approach that we adopted today. You can find yourself in difficulties from time to time, but we need to react to those difficulties a lot better than we did today. It was the same in our game against Tottenham [lost 3-1]. We thought we'd overcome that problem. I don't mind losing, but I don't like losing in this manner."

Sarri had commented on Chelsea's lack of mentality earlier in the season.

Chelsea have lost 5 times in their last 16 matches after going the first 18 matches of the season unbeaten.

Pep Guardiola: Spying Is A Part Of Club Culture

Jan 18, 2019 3:43 PM

In response to the controversy surrounding "Spygate", Pep Guardiola stated that spying on opponents is a part of footballing culture everywhere else but England.

"In other countries everybody does that. They are open. When I was training in Munich there were people on the mountain [overlooking training] with cameras and long lenses watching what we were doing. Everybody does it. It's the culture of all the clubs, not just the previous ones where I worked. It was a part of the club," said Guardiola.

Guardiola added that he's never spied with Manchester City.

"I'm not going to send someone to Huddersfield if that is the question."

Jose Mourinho: Clubs Need To Modernize Footballing Structure

Jan 17, 2019 6:08 PM

Jose Mourinho stated that football clubs need to re-organize their structure to handle modern players.

"Everything good I did with players is not news anymore. News is when you have problems. In modern football there is a problem between the coach and the player," said Mourinho.

Mourinho called for a liaison between the manager and the player to help deal with potential confrontations.

"We are not in a time anymore where the coach, by himself, is powerful enough to cope and to have a relationship of education and sometimes confrontation with players who are not the best professionals. The club must have an owner, a chief executive, a sports director and then a manager. This is a structure that can cope with all the problems that modernity is bringing to all of us. A club must be very well organised to cope with all of these kind of situations where the manager is only the manager and is not trying to keep the discipline or trying to educate the players."
