MLS, Timbers Terminate Brian Fernandez Contract

Nov 15, 2019 7:40 PM

MLS and the Portland Timbers have terminated Brian Fernandez's contract due to his failure to comply with the league's substance abuse and behavioral health policy.

The 25-year-old scored 10 goals in 15 matches with the team. He entered rehab following the Timbers' final game of the regular season.

Sources also indicate that the Timbers plan to sue Necaxa, Fernandez's former side.

Bernardo Silva Suspended One Match Over Tweet

Nov 13, 2019 1:58 PM

Bernardo Silva was banned for one match and fined $64,000 for a tweet sent to teammate Benjamin Mendy.

“The Manchester City midfielder’s social media activity on 22 September 2019 breached FA Rule E3(1), as it was insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute, and constituted an ‘Aggravated Breach’, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as it included reference, whether expressed or implied, to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin," released the FA in a statement.

Pep Guardiola defended Silva, saying that he and Mendy are close friends.

“Bernardo is one of the most lovely people I have ever met in my life. He speaks four or five languages – that is the best way to understand how open-minded he is – and one of his best friends is Mendy. He is like a brother for him. The image for the two is not about the colour of the skin.”
