Martin Skrtel has received a three-game ban for his stamp on David De Gea of Manchester United.

Neither referee Martin Atkinson nor his assistants saw the incident, meaning the FA could take retrospective action based on television footage.

The FA confirmed it had charged Skrtel with violent conduct in a statement that read: "In Premier League matches, if an incident has not been seen by the match officials a three-man panel of former elite officials will be asked by the FA to review the footage independently of each other.

Skrtel will miss the Premier League matches against Arsenal and Newcastle and the FA Cup quarterfinal replay at Blackburn.
