Diego Costa Contesting Three-Match Ban

Jan 30, 2015 8:34 AM

Diego Costa is facing a three-match ban for his apparent stamp on Emre Can of Liverpool during Tuesday's Capital One Cup semifinal.

Costa is contesting the ban, which would force him to miss Saturday's critical match for Chelsea against Manchester City.

The incident - one of several during an action-packed 120 minutes - happened in close proximity to the dugouts, but was missed by the match officials. It was subsequently reviewed on video by referee Michael Oliver, with the charge following as part of the FA’s fast-tracked procedures.

Cristiano Ronaldo Receives Two-Match Ban

Jan 28, 2015 7:12 PM

Cristiano Ronaldo has received a two-match ban for kicking out at an opponent over the weekend.

Ronaldo will miss Real Madrid's home matches against Real Sociedad and Sevilla, but he'll return for the Feb. 7 match at Atlético Madrid.

The last time Ronaldo was sent off, for a similar incident at Athletic Bilbao in January 2014, he received a three-match ban.

La Liga president Javier Tebas told news agency EFE that Ronaldo's apology was something which should be appreciated.

"It's not up to me [the punishment], that's for the Federation's Competition Committee," Tebas said. "I'd rather focus on the apology from Cristiano afterwards. Unsportsmanlike behaviour isn't good for La Liga, Cristiano was unsporting but I'll stick with the fact he wasn't but apologised. I like to look for the positive and I appreciated his apology and that's something we value."

Real Madrid Under Investigation By FIFA

Jan 27, 2015 12:17 PM

Real Madrid could face a transfer ban, similar to the one imposed on Barcelona, after FIFA opened an investigation into the deals involving under-age players.

According to reports in Spain by AS, the investigation is centred on the signing of two 12-year-olds, Manuel Godoy and Fernando Macías, brought from Venezuela in 2012 via Miguel Ángel Coira, a former Argentinean footballer who lives in Spain and has a football school for young players in Madrid.

Emilio Butragueño, Real’s director of institutional relations, backed Fifa’s determination to tackle the issue but denied suggestions they could be handed a similar punishment. He told AS: “First, we agree with Fifa on the issue. We’ll continue to work with them in everything they ask of us. We are absolutely comfortable with Real Madrid’s behavior.”
