A Spanish judge rejected La Liga's petition to play a match between Atletico Madrid and Villarreal in Miami on December 6th.

La Liga president Javier Tebas said that he will continue to try to stage a La Liga match outside of Spain, saying it is integral to the growth of the league.

"If we want to stay in the vanguard of world football we have to work a lot with fans outside of Spain. If the NBA and the NFL do it, why not us? I know the Italian league are looking into it and perhaps they will play a game abroad before us," said Tebas.

Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales demanded Tebas' resignation.

"RFEF understands that his 'absolutely hostile and irresponsible' attitude toward the insitution that is in charge of football in Spain, is negatively affecting this sport and particularly the clubs that form part of the league and he should cease and desist immediately. In this manner, we are reiterating our request that all the member clubs of the league begin a dialogue with the federation and we are calling for the president of the league to be removed from office immediately or to step down."
