Wayne Rooney had never heard of Manchester United's £36 million man Anthony Martial of Monaco.

Rooney turned to Martial's fellow Frenchman Morgan Schneiderlin in an attempt to learn about the prospective signing.

"It's normal Rooney doesn't know me," Martial told reporters at a news conference in France on Wednesday.

The fee has received criticism considering Martial is just 19 and has a small body of work.

"I don't know if I'm worth €80 million [£58 million]. That's between the two clubs," said Martial.

"It's up to me to prove my worth. It's pretty crazy for a player of my age, but I will try to ignore that and focus only on the pitch."
