Radamel Falcao will join Manchester United on a season-long loan from Monaco.

The loan fee is understood to be no more than £6 million, with the club having the option of a permanent deal for the player at the end of the season.

Falcao recently returned from a serious knee injury that prevented him from playing for Colombia in the World Cup.

The striker is on £300,000-a-week at Monaco, although United are not expected to cover the full amount.

With Van Gaal playing a two-striker system that has Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie as the first-choice forwards, how Falcao fits into the side is yet to be determined.

Arsenal and Manchester City were also interested in Falcao.
