Guardiola Calls Mauricio Pochettino One Of The World's Best Managers

Sep 30, 2016 4:08 PM

Mauricio Pochettino has been called one of the best managers in the world by Pep Guardiola ahead of Manchester City's trip to play Tottenham Hotspur.

"I don't think he's one of the best managers in England, he's one of the best football managers in the world," he told a news conference.

"I enjoy watching Tottenham. Not [just] right now -- since last year. I think what he's doing is an amazing job in London in Tottenham. The way they play I like a lot. He's aggressive without the ball and has a lot of quality with his players.

"Last season they were there until the last two or three games with the chance to be champions. So still this year they are playing in a high, high level.

"They are second. It will be a tough, tough game and I am looking forward to going to White Hart Lane for the first time in my life as well."

Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool Close To How I Imagine Football

Sep 30, 2016 11:46 AM

Jurgen Klopp said Liverpool has always been a club he had interest in and that an offer "would be difficult to turn down."

Klopp left Borussia Dortmund after the 14-15 season and signed his deal with Liverpool shortly after the start of the 15-16 season.

"It's very, very close to how I imagine football -- extremely emotional," said Klopp.

"It's now about developing the club so that it has a natural right to win titles. Everything we can pick up along the way, we will pick up. That's the plan."

Arsene Wenger Could 'One Day' Be Interested In England Job

Oct 2, 2016 11:42 PM

Arsene Wenger said he could be interested in someday managing the England national team.

Wenger is in the final season of his current contract with Arsenal and England's job is now available with the departure of Sam Allardyce.

“My priority is to do well here. If I am free one day why not, but at the moment my focus is on my job,” Wenger said.

Wenger also talked about the job on Wednesday.

“It was a huge surprise what happened to Sam Allardyce,” he said. “Who could have predicted that 48 hours ago? Nobody. The game’s always full of surprises. My priority has always been this club and until the end of this season, I’m here. I’m completely focused on that.

“I’ve said many times that my priority has always been Arsenal Football Club and I have to assess how well I do until the end of the season.”

Cristiano Ronaldo Has Considered Role In Management After He Retires

Sep 29, 2016 12:32 PM

Cristiano Ronaldo has considered becoming a manager when his playing career is over but he's too focused on the present to worry about the future.

“I think a lot about it,” he said. “Right now I don’t want to be a manager. In a few years people will say that I have the right profile but I don’t want to be. It’s too complicated. At the moment I just want to focus on my football, my passion. Nobody knows what the future holds. In five, six, seven years I might change my mind and become a manager.”

Ronaldo turns 32 in February and has interest in playing for Real Madrid until he's 40.

Louis Van Gaal Wanted United Players To Train With Virtual Reality

Sep 29, 2016 11:13 AM

Louis van Gaal considered using virtual reality to help players improve during his time with Manchester United.

Van Gaal's training methods were reportedly questioned by a group of United players during his time as manager, and performance analyst Max Reckers has explained the coaching staff were ready to explore different techniques to engage the squad.

"Louis is very open to new technology. He's a very forward-thinking manager," Reckers -- who was described as a "computer guru" and "like my son" by Van Gaal in 2014 -- is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying at the Soccerex Global Convention.

"The task for the club and coach is to facilitate that to an optimum level. My generation is the last generation with video.

"Everyone younger knows iPads, virtual reality, FIFA ... so we have to accept they don't watch TV the way we did. I watched a game for 90 minutes; there's not a single player who does that anymore. We have to adapt.

"The ones who are good FIFA players have a small advantage with the virtual reality. It's not so much about them being old or young, but the type of personality I think. Some really like to observe themselves, others don't.

"I didn't want to be the guy who puts in new technology without the right purpose. You have to change to the situation and your players. United have everything, specialists everywhere."

Klinsmann had been linked with several managerial posts over the summer, including those of English Premier League sides Everton and Southampton.

The United States will play two international friendlies against Cuba and New Zealand on Oct. 7 and 11, respectively, before World Cup qualifiers with Mexico and Costa Rica in mid November.

Lionel Messi Has Become More Of A Playmaker In Recent Seasons

Sep 28, 2016 12:02 PM

A larger percentage of Lionel Messi's output has been converted into assists over the past few seasons.

In 2012-13, they consisted of 26 percent of his goal involvements. That number has since grown to 41 percent and 42 percent before jumping to 62 percent last season.

Messi moved back out to the right-wing midway through Luis Suarez's first season with Barcelona.

Messi's general involvement remains consistent, passing with a similar frequency now as he was as a false nine and his dribbling statistics are similar.

Messi starts out wide before cutting inside now and most of his passes therefore still take place in the center but in a deeper position.

Long passes made up 5.5 percent of his overall passes in 2012-13 but have grown to 6.7 in 2014-15 and 9.7 in 2015-16.

Messi's through balls have increased, going from 1.76 per 90 in 12-13 to 2.41 in 14-15 and 2.23 in 15-16, which is the highest average of any regular starter in Europe's top five leagues. Messi's completion rate even improved while his attempt rate increased.

Messi's goal-scoring has decreased slightly from 1.10 goals per 90 minutes in 14-15 to 0.83 in 15-16.

Mourinho May Protect Wayne Rooney From Media Scrutiny By Sitting Him

Sep 28, 2016 10:58 AM

Jose Mourinho is unsure if he'll start Wayne Rooney in Manchester United's Europa League match this week due to the scrutiny of the media.

United has appeared to be a much more coherent side without Rooney so far this season.

Mourinho said at a news conference: "I was completely convinced of playing him [Rooney] tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'll do that now because, with the situation that you create, I think he really can't afford to have a performance that is not really good and I am here to protect him and have to analyze the best thing for him. If he is not totally ready for it, I will discuss that with the medical staff."

Rooney was a substitute for the first time in the Premier League this season when United defeated Leicester City 4-1 and he's since been dealing with a back problem.

Jamie Vardy Was Concerned By Tactical Fit With Arsenal

Sep 29, 2016 11:13 AM

Jamie Vardy says he turned down an offer from Arsenal to continue to build on Leicester City's Premier League success.

Arsenal triggered Vardy's £20 million release clause but he eventually decided to stay with Leicester on an improved deal.

"It wasn't to do with 'loyalty' or how I feel about my teammates," Vardy wrote in his autobiography, serialized in The Sun. "Players always come and go.

"It was more a case of seeing Leicester as a club that wanted to build on what we achieved with the title and I want to be part of that. I'm happy with how everything has turned out.

"'The dream continues,' Claudio texted me after I agreed to stay. That's exactly how I felt, too."

Vardy was concerned by his potential fit with Arsenal.

"I tried to work out the pros and cons," Vardy said. "With people like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil creating chances, Arsenal felt they could benefit me as much as I could them.

"But I also thought about the tactical aspect. You look at Arsenal's style of play and they don't get the ball forward quickly in the same way Leicester do for those runs I like to make in behind the defence.

"One thing that didn't worry me was the idea that I wouldn't be the 'main man' at Arsenal.

"Every time I've moved, I've managed to meet the challenge in front of me. We even looked at new schools for the children, but I got to the stage where I felt with my heart and head that I wanted to stay at Leicester."
